Two years ago, SAM began educating villages to increase contraceptive use, decrease unmet need for contraceptives, delay the age of marriage, delay the first pregnancy, and increase the time between pregnancies.

India’s current population is estimated to be at 1.29 billion and is the second most populous country in the world, after China. India has only 2% of the world’s total land but supports 14% of the world’s total population. This puts a huge strain on the country.

What is Population Stabilization?
India’s current population is estimated to be at 1.29 billion and is the second most populous country in the world, after China. With a population growth rate at 1.58%, India is predicted to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by the end of 2030.

What is Causing This?
There are a number of reasons for India’s rapidly growing population. Some of these include illiteracy, high fertility rate, rapid decline in death rates/mortality rates, early marriage and immigration from neighboring countries. Unfortunately, much of the growth has occurred among the poorest socio-economic percentile. This puts a strain on the resources, infrastructure and the economy of the country.
