The good news
Embedded in the gloomy news about the population explosion, there is some good news too. India is close to achieving the goal of a stable population. Demographers measure Total Fertility Rate (TFR), which is the number of children a woman has during her life. A TFR of 2.1 is considered the replacement level at which the population does not grow any further.
It is estimated, that India is close to the replacement level of 2.1. Some southern states are already below the replacement level. Approximately 100 districts of India, mostly in the north have yet to reach this level.
The government is laying special emphasis on these aspirational districts to achieve the target of population stabilization. SAM is closely working with public health agencies to achieve this target in Bahraich, which is one of the aspirational districts.
